Samira Boon and NEXT architects were selected to design a space divider for the main hall of the Theatres Tilburg, after responding to a pitch set out by the Textile Lab of the Textile Museum. Adhering to the demands of the Theatres Tilburg – the divider must be semitransparent, adjustable and easily packed away – the designers created a foldable structure measuring thirty metres in width by three metres in height, inspired by the way caterpillars can adapt their form. To compliment the hall’s architecture of Jo Coenen and interact with Peter Struycken’s light artwork, the mobile screen has a reticent white colour. More surprising is the change that takes place when the lights are dimmed and the structure reveals a pattern of glow-in-the-dark yarn causing the screen to subtly glow during concerts. This special luminous yarn was interwoven in the screen material at the Textile Lab by Boon, creating a delicate pattern. Thanks to its shape and adaptability, the divider is able to transform the large main hall of the Theatres Tilburg into an intimate space suitable for smaller concerts and gatherings, and despite its large proportions remain a piece of understated elegance. top photo by davidfotografie

This special artwork, commissioned by Theatres Tilburg was revealed during a concert of Amsterdam’s Sinfonietta. The object can best be described as an enormous space divider that can transform its size as well as its character and as such the entire concert hall. The screen is made out of white fabric and green glow-in-the-dark yarn, and the pattern will keep glowing in the dark even after the beautiful concert hall had turned off its lights – leaving a translucent atmosphere. Click here for more information on the project.

For its headquarters in Utrecht, Dutch multinational Rabobank sought to create flexible workspaces and meeting rooms, divided not by hard shells but rather soft furnishings. To match the interior design of Next architects of the open-plan office adjacent to the catering facilities or Bakery, Studio Samira Boon was asked to design attractive storey-high wall coverings which would meet both the visual and acoustic needs of the space. Spanning the length of the cafeteria is a modular screen system featuring a landscape pattern. The screens or textile panels can be moved up or down to separate or merge various working areas. An acoustic challenge came in the form of a threesome of round meeting rooms, located amidst the cafeteria. Fashioned out of sliding walls, the barrels form a complete sound barrier when closed, as they are covered in 3-D textiles inside and out. On the upper floors, we were asked to create wall coverings for a number of rounded walls, the yellow gradient design either strengthens or seems to deform the wall’s perspective. For this project Rabobank commissioned a number of different architects and designers to work on the interior. We worked together with Next architects, as well as employing a special machine to create the enormous woven structures. As a crown on the work, this project was nominated for the Lensvelt the Architect interior prize (LAi).
